Stop Preaching Forgiveness to the Drowning
a poem for me
When you see a woman drowning
don’t ask her to forgive the man beside her
throwing anchors
in her direction.
You may be able to see that he is drowning too.
She can’t. Plus,
forgiving him now will actually kill her.
Trust her deeper wisdom in this moment
her instinct to turn away.
For the love of God
stop preaching forgiveness to the drowning
when their only immediate options are turning away
or throwing anchors back and forth until you drown.
